TalkItEasy is designed to collect as little as possible. Here is a plain account of what we collect, why, and what we never touch.

How sign-in works

You do not need an account to use TalkItEasy. When you open the app for the first time, it signs you in anonymously. No email, no password.

During onboarding, you can optionally enter a name to personalise the app (for example, “Hey Sarah” on your home screen). If you do, that name is stored in your account. It is not shared with other users or used for any other purpose. You can change or remove it at any time from Settings.

If you choose to link a Google or Apple account later (from Settings), we store your email address and display name so you can restore your saved words and streak if you reinstall the app or switch devices. Account linking is optional and can be undone at any time.

What we collect

Your activity in the app

We store the following in your personal Firestore document (users/{yourId}), which only you can read or write:

This data lives in your account. It is not shared with other users and is not used for any purpose other than making the app work for you.

Crash reports

We use Sentry to collect crash reports when the app unexpectedly closes. These reports include the technical state of the app at the time of the crash, the device model, OS version, and app version. We configure Sentry with sendDefaultPii = false, which means IP addresses and user-agent strings are never captured. Crash reports do not include your saved words, your search history, or any personally identifying information.

Anonymous usage analytics

We use PostHog to understand how the app is used in aggregate. Every analytics event is anonymous. PostHog is configured with personProfiles: never, which means no user profile is ever created or stored on PostHog’s side. We cannot link any event to you individually.

We use this data to understand which features get used, where people drop off, and what to build next. That is the full extent of it.

Because analytics events are never tied to your identity, they are not deleted when you delete your account. There is nothing to connect them to you in the first place.

Your microphone

The Echo Lab feature lets you record yourself saying a word and compare it to the native audio. The app will ask for microphone permission before you use this feature and explain why it is needed.

Your voice recordings are processed entirely on your device. They are never uploaded, stored on a server, or shared with anyone.

Audio caching

The app caches word audio files locally on your device to avoid re-downloading them. This cache lives in your device’s temporary files directory and is managed automatically by the OS. You can also clear it manually from Settings.

What we never collect

Data retention

Your account and all associated data (name, saved words, streak, preferences) are kept until you delete your account. You can do this from Settings at any time. When you delete your account, we permanently remove your Firestore document and your Firebase Auth record from our servers. This happens immediately. There is no retention window.

If you use TalkItEasy without ever entering a name or linking a Google or Apple account, no personally identifying information is stored. If you uninstall without linking an account, that session cannot be recovered.

Third-party services

Your data is stored and processed using the following services, each operating under its own privacy policy (linked in Settings):

ServiceRoleWhat they hold on our behalf
Firebase (Google)Auth, database, and word audio content deliveryAnonymous user ID, saved words, preferences, name
SentryCrash reportingDevice info and app state at crash time (no PII)
PostHogAnonymous usage analyticsAnonymous event data. No user profiles, ever.

Firebase is our infrastructure provider, not a recipient of your data for their own purposes. Google’s data processing terms apply.

Children

TalkItEasy is not intended for children under 13. We do not knowingly collect data from anyone under 13. If you believe we have done so by mistake, contact us and we will delete it as soon as reasonably possible and within 30 days of your request.

Governing law

This policy is governed by the laws of the State of Washington, United States, without regard to conflict of law provisions.

Changes

If we make meaningful changes to this policy, we will update the date at the top of this page and notify you via the app.
